The Pinwheel Galaxy
Messier Catalog: M 101
Constellation: Ursa Major - The Big Bear

The next galaxy on my list was the beautiful spiral M101, also nick-named as the "Pinwheel Galaxy". It was discovered by Pierre Méchain and added by Charles Messier to his catalogue of comet-like objects.

We find this considerably large spiral consisting of billions of stars around 25 million light years away in the voids of the galactic window of spring constellations where the view is unobstructed from gas and dust from our own galaxy, the milky way. Mind the faint companion and background galaxies!
