The Great Orion Nebula
Messier Designation: M 42
Constellation: Orion

This is a nice colour view of one of the probably best known celestial objects beyond our solar system. The light of the red hydrogen gas beautifully contrasts with the blue hot stars we see in this area of the sky in abundance.

The picture was just a lucky shot I took in an extremely windy night in which I initially had planned to do other work. A close-up of M 31 failed because the wind gusts did not allow longer exposure times. So I switched to this object because a total of a bit more than 1 hour in small pieces of 3 minutes was enough to capture even the outskirts of this nebula.
